In Brief... Army Cadet

 Brief Description:

Enlists in the Irish Army to train as an Officer.

The Irish Army's duties include providing for the defence of the State from either internal or external aggression. Internally the Army works with the Garda Siochana. The Army also takes part in peacekeeping missions for the United Nations and may work with search and rescue operations and emergencies.

All of these responsibilities require organisation and responsibility. Soldiers need to trained and supervised. Equipment needs to be monitored and missions need to be planned and executed. The Army Cadet is enlisted into the Irish Army to provide leadership and management. He/she trains to become a commander of soldiers taking responsibility for them.

An Irish Army Cadet receives a commission as an Officer following successful training. They enter the ranks of the armed forces as a Second Lieutenant.

There are set educational, medical and age requirements to be met before acceptance.


Personal Attributes: able to take responsibility, leadership, courageous, quick thinking.

Cadetships are usually advertised in National Newspapers. All eligible candidates attend for preliminary interview. Candidates who reach a satisfactory standard at this interview will be required, at a later date, to attend for assessment tests and a medical examination followed by a final interview. Many successful entrants are graduates.
