What facilities does the department have to support these courses? The department housing a modern and spacious hospitality training suite including a production kitchen, service kitchen, training restaurant, training bar and reception facilities. The Institute has extensive library as well as on-line and information technology resources. Such resources aim to provide information and learning resources as well as quality services to meet the needs of learning, teaching and research within LIT and the wider community including local industry.
What connections does the department have with Industry? The department has extensive connections with industry and actively networks with a wide variety of local, national and international organizations such as enterprise boards, Irish Hotel Federation, Tourism Concern, Restaurant Association of Ireland, Panel of Chefs of Ireland, Eurotoques, Slow Food Movement and the Irish Travel Association.
How many students do you accept each year on these courses? The department boasts over 650 students across our programmes. However, the department delivers and teaches all courses using an active learning approach. This involves using a variety of techniques such as seminars, presentations, field trips, practical sessions, role plays and a host of other interactive and student centered delivery methods.
What particular attributes are required by students taking these courses? The aim of the department is to foster individuals professional and personal abilities using traditional teaching methods while engaging in more active and ‘hands on’ teaching styles to maximize learning opportunities for different learner groups.
Where did last years graduates go? The vast majority of learning took employment in their field of study both in Ireland and abroad while a limited number decided to remain in the Institute to further their studies.

The department of humanities provides an excellent learning environment for a variety of learners including school leavers, mature students, part time students and international students. We offer a wide range of practical student centered courses and all have a significant placement component.

The Millennium Theatre with its avant-garde glass and steel structure is the perfect example of the quality of facilities students can expect on campus.
The Library with the Technical Library and Headquarters are located at the main Moylish Park Campus and the Art Library is located at the Clare Street Campus.
Video Conferencing facilities are available on campus. Videoconferencing uses telecommunications of audio and video to bring people at different sites together for a meeting.
Student Accommodation provision provides on a referral basis, where you receive a screened list of housing from which the required housing is selected at your discretion.
The Alumni Association was set up for all past graduates, and those of its former names, Regional Technical College Limerick (RTC Limerick), the College of Art, Commerce & Technology (CoACT), Limerick Technical College, etc. Past graduates are automatically members of the Alumni Association.
Past graduates are sent details about the exciting changes taking place in LIT. These included the refurbishment of the School of Art & Design in Clare Street, the addition of the state-of-the-art 350 seat Millennium Theatre – the first purpose-built theatre in Limerick in 75 years, in addition a newly opened 550 seat Aula Maxima.
Student Radio – Wired FM. LIT and Mary Immaculate College host their own joint community of interest radio station WIRED FM. The station operates under a licence approved by the BCI and, apart from being directly linked to third level education, has a remit to develop into the local communities. Each Institution has its own studio.
Scholars’ Restaurant, Java City, Coffee Dock and Sandwich Bar. Restaurant facilities are available at both campus locations with hot and cold meals, coffee dock, and a wide range of choices. A Java City specialty coffee house is located in the Students’ Union Building.
